Non-chemicals ASEAN treatement in groundwater with iron xide coated sand (IOCS)
Arsenic present in natural groundwater or contaminated by human activities, which is odorless, colorless, and toxic. Although using water with very low arsenic content, but in the long run, it can cause cancer for people and a high risk of death, creating a burden on society.
In fact, the level of arsenic contamination in Vietnam is at an alarming level, particularly in the Red River Delta and the Mekong River Delta. About 17 million Vietnamese people are using arsenic-contaminated groundwater, mostly in rural areas because there is no centralized tap water. The challenge for DNP Hawaco is to solve arsenic pollution in the short and medium term and bring clean water to rural areas.
To address this challenge, DNP Hawaco has chosen a non-chemical technology to treat ASEN in groundwater with iron oxide coated sand (IOCS); applied to 2 water supply stations My Thanh Nam and An Thai Trung water supply station, in Cai Be district with the advantages are:
- Do not use chemicals
- Simple operation, practical, low maintenance
- IOCS material has a long life. At My Thanh Nam project, IOCS is regenerated after 1.5 years of operating the system with a total water flow through IOCS of 190,550 m3.
- Low investment rate (800,000 VND/m3)
- Made in Vietnam.
This method uses iron oxide coated sand grains (Iron Oxide Coated Sand, IOCS) that have been removed, reducing the arsenic content in the water to the lowest possible level. In addition, Iron and Manganese in groundwater are also completely treated after flowing through IOCS filter materials. My Thanh Nam Arsenic Treatment System has been in operation for a year and a half, providing a total of 190,550 m3 of water and regenerated IOCS material for the first time.
