United Nations Water Conference 2023
The 2023 United Nations Water Conference, also known as the Mid-term Results Review Conference on the implementation of the Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018-2028), will be celeberated from 22 to 24 March, 2023 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, which is co-hosted by the Government of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The 2023 United Nations Water Conference, also known as the Mid-term Results Review Conference on the implementation of the Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018-2028), will be celeberated from 22 to 24 March, 2023 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, which is co-hosted by the Government of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The conference will include an opening and closing session, 6 plenary sessions and 5 interactive dialogue sessions, along with side events organized by the participants. The results of this Conference will be compiled in a summary report and will be presented by the President of the United Nations General Assembly during the 2023 session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the United Nations Country (HLPF).
The Kick-off Ceremony of the Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018-2028 was launched by the United Nations on March 22, 2018. At this ceremony, the President of Tajikistan, on behalf of the countries participating in the High-Level Discussion Group on Water, shared the Group’s recommendations on the focus of the Decade of Action, which emphasized sharing information about water, protecting water resources, increasing investment in water research, increasing attention to vulnerable groups in accessing water…
Also at the kick-off ceremony, representatives of countries shared about international and regional cooperation efforts to address water-related challenges; introduce innovations and technologies to treat the scarcity of clean water; emphasizing the important of looking at the issue of Water in its entirety along with other development, security and environmental issues.
The lack of access to safe drinking water and basic hygiene criterias, along with water scarcity and water pollution, are among the biggest challenges facing the international community today, especially for developing countries. The Water-related disasters are on the rise, along with the impacts of climate change, urbanization, population growth, desertification and drought, etc., make the ability to ensure comprehensive integrated water resource management even more difficult to implement. Therefore, the Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development” aims to continue and expand the framework of dialogues between countries and international organizations to create new impetus, promote efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.
